MAC's Pit Bull Spay/Neuter Task Force
The Massachusetts Animal Coalition (MAC) recently formed a new task force on pit bulls. The goal of the task force is to decrease the numbers of Pit Bulls surrendered to animal shelters, rescue groups and animal control organizations in Massachusetts by helping current Pit Bull owners keep their dogs happy, healthy and in their homes. The task force is achieving this goal by promoting spay and neuter programs for Pit Bulls and improving the image of the breed.
The task force recently hosted a free spay and neuter day for Pit Bulls in Boston on May 16th where 20 dog received this surgery (see flier below).
The task force recognizes that Pit Bulls are the most common breed surrendered to adoption centers and found as strays and that spaying and neutering that is affordable is key to reducing the number of homeless pit bulls in our state.
The task force has developed a webpage (http://www.massanimalcoalition.com/resources/pitbulls/) to provide resources for pit bull owners. Information on low-cost spay/neuter clinics, homeowners insurance and information about the many myths surrounding the breed can be found here.
MAC is taking a leading role in bringing groups throughout the state together to proactively address the issue and work to decrease the number of Pit Bulls abandoned by their owners each year.
Latest news (July 2011): Thirteen Pit Bulls were spayed/neutered and received their rabies vaccinations and veterinary care at the 5th free clinic on June 26th. A massive flyering effort was undertaken in targeted Boston neighborhoods including Mattapan, Hyde Park, Dorchester and Roxbury. Over 40 volunteers turned out to show their support of the event, including three veterinarians who donated their time to help Pit Bulls in need. In total 73 Pit Bulls have been spayed or neutered in the past year thanks to the combined efforts of the members of the task force.
